Encountered in the Focus Groups: Listening to Youth<\/h1>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-751380b e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"751380b\" data-element_type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-aca6f5b elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"aca6f5b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p data-start=\"446\" data-end=\"719\">As part of the HarmonyPath project, national focus groups were conducted in <strong data-start=\"522\" data-end=\"554\">Germany, Croatia, and France<\/strong> with young people and youth workers. These discussions played a crucial role in shaping the Digital Adventures, Coaching Cards, and overall peacebuilding framework.<\/p><p data-start=\"721\" data-end=\"997\">Rather than focusing on extreme or isolated incidents of violence, participants across all countries consistently highlighted a different reality: <strong data-start=\"868\" data-end=\"996\">violence and harm are most often experienced as subtle, repeated, and emotionally draining moments embedded in everyday life<\/strong>.<\/p><p data-start=\"999\" data-end=\"1142\">What emerged was not a single story, but a set of interconnected insights shaped by national contexts, social environments, and cultural norms.<\/p><p data-start=\"1210\" data-end=\"1524\">In the German focus groups, digital communication was described as central to young people\u2019s social lives. Conflict rarely appeared as overt aggression. Instead, it took the form of <strong data-start=\"1392\" data-end=\"1421\">constant background noise<\/strong>: repeated jokes, sarcasm, exclusion through silence, and normalized hostile language in online spaces.<\/p><p data-start=\"1526\" data-end=\"1557\">Young learners emphasized that:<\/p><ul data-start=\"1558\" data-end=\"1715\"><li data-start=\"1558\" data-end=\"1607\"><p data-start=\"1560\" data-end=\"1607\">Harm online is cumulative rather than episodic,<\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"1608\" data-end=\"1653\"><p data-start=\"1610\" data-end=\"1653\">Silence often feels safer than speaking up,<\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"1654\" data-end=\"1715\"><p data-start=\"1656\" data-end=\"1715\">Social isolation is a stronger fear than formal punishment.<\/p><\/li><\/ul><p data-start=\"1717\" data-end=\"1972\">Youth workers echoed these concerns, highlighting that <strong data-start=\"1772\" data-end=\"1824\">subtle harm is harder to address institutionally<\/strong> than visible incidents. They expressed uncertainty about when and how to intervene, especially when behavior does not clearly cross formal \u201crules.\u201d<\/p><p data-start=\"1974\" data-end=\"2210\">A key message from Germany was the need for <strong data-start=\"2018\" data-end=\"2050\">language that does not shame<\/strong>. Both youth and facilitators rejected moralizing labels and preferred approaches that focus on <strong data-start=\"2146\" data-end=\"2175\">impact rather than intent<\/strong>, curiosity rather than accusation.<\/p><p data-start=\"2490\" data-end=\"2775\">The Croatian focus groups reflected a different social reality. Many participants live in <strong data-start=\"2580\" data-end=\"2622\">small or closely connected communities<\/strong>, where school, family, and social life overlap heavily. In these settings, conflict is rarely anonymous and often carries long-term social consequences.<\/p><p data-start=\"2777\" data-end=\"2860\">Young people described silence not as indifference, but as a <strong data-start=\"2838\" data-end=\"2859\">survival strategy<\/strong>:<\/p><ul data-start=\"2861\" data-end=\"3017\"><li data-start=\"2861\" data-end=\"2907\"><p data-start=\"2863\" data-end=\"2907\">Speaking up can damage reputation for years,<\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"2908\" data-end=\"2967\"><p data-start=\"2910\" data-end=\"2967\">Being seen as \u201cproblematic\u201d carries lasting consequences,<\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"2968\" data-end=\"3017\"><p data-start=\"2970\" data-end=\"3017\">Humor is often used to mask discomfort or harm.<\/p><\/li><\/ul><p data-start=\"3019\" data-end=\"3215\">Youth workers described navigating multiple roles at once: facilitator, mediator, community member, and sometimes informal authority figure. This complexity limits how directly they can intervene.<\/p><p data-start=\"3734\" data-end=\"3999\">The French focus groups highlighted a context of <strong data-start=\"3783\" data-end=\"3823\">high civic expression and visibility<\/strong>. Young people are encouraged to have opinions, engage in debate, and take public positions\u2014but often without adequate support for dialogue, listening, or emotional processing.<\/p><p data-start=\"4001\" data-end=\"4038\">Young learners described conflict as:<\/p><ul data-start=\"4039\" data-end=\"4153\"><li data-start=\"4039\" data-end=\"4064\"><p data-start=\"4041\" data-end=\"4064\">Loud, fast, and public,<\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"4065\" data-end=\"4103\"><p data-start=\"4067\" data-end=\"4103\">Difficult to slow down once visible,<\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"4104\" data-end=\"4153\"><p data-start=\"4106\" data-end=\"4153\">Driven by urgency and performative positioning.<\/p><\/li><\/ul><p data-start=\"4155\" data-end=\"4377\">Many felt pressure to respond immediately and feared that mistakes would not be forgiven once made publicly.
